Using Keywords to Find a Topic

  1. Use the Keyword option if you do not know the exact title, subject heading, or conference/organization name.

Example:

medieval and women finds the title Women in medieval society

  1. Special characters

a. These special characters are not “indexed” and are not searchable as characters, or words:  @, $, #, %, +

b. Some special characters are treated as instructions, as follows.  Any characters not listed here are excluded from searching.

asterisk

match up to 5 characters (wildcard 1-5 trailing characters after 3 specified char.)

**

double asterisk

match any numbers of characters (unlimited number of trailing characters)

?

question mark

match a single character (single wildcard after 3 specified characters)

: ( )

colon and parentheses

special use in record indexing and searching

  1. With Advanced Keyword Searching you will have options to broaden or narrow your search.
  2. Additional keyword search instructions are provided on the Search menu once you begin the search.
  3. Once you have found an item useful for your research, you can locate other related materials by clicking on the subject terms.
