Subject Headings in the Union Catalog

The Union Catalog has two subject heading indexes:

  1. Library of Congress (LC) subject headings
  2. Medical and Other, which includes National Library of Medicine (MeSH) headings, agricultural and children's headings, and specialized index terms for genre, form, occupation and function.

Subject headings generally consist of a main heading followed by sub-headings.
Examples:

Foot -- Ultrasound imaging
Islamic religious education -- Law and legislation
Sculpture, Modern -- 19th century--United States--Exhibitions

Summit allows you to search for either the main heading or most sub-headings.

To find the lists of standard subject headings, ask a reference librarian at your local library.
